Inow knew for certain George had lied to me about the visits from his son. As much as I didn’t trust Harrold, I could tell from the arrogant look on his face that he was being genuine when he told me Philip had never stepped foot into Ravenwood. This worried me greatly. If George had lied to me so sincerely about his son, what else had he been lying to me about?

The majority of my team and several members of staff at Ravenwood had tried to convince me George wasn’t reliable and that I shouldn’t put all of my faith and trust in him. Now, it was starting to look like they were right. Had George simply felt lonely with just Colby for company and went to great lengths to get some attention? Was he really a man so desperate that he’d have made up two shocking assaults just to get us to see him?

No. No, I couldn’t believe that of him.

I’d just chided Nadia and Elijah for questioning George’s validity, and I couldn’t be a hypocrite and do exactly the same. Not after how much time and energy I’d already put into the man. Plus, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but there was something just so likeable, so genuine about George. He radiated respect and purity, and as much as I was usually a massive sceptic, I couldn’t find it in me to see any bad in him. I knew, as uncomfortable as it would be, the best course of action would be to go back and ask George about all of this and simply hear him out.

The man deserved that, at least.

I left the reception area and started to make my way back to George’s room. I knew, once I was there that I’d have to speak to him gently and privately about all of this. The last thing I wanted to do was embarrass him, but I knew I had to allow him the opportunity, to tell the truth and explain things from his point of view.

As I approached George’s door, I noticed Elijah was casually leaning up against the wall, looking like the most laid-back bodyguard I’d ever seen. He was so effortlessly handsome that, even when he stood there, his elfin features, his bleached blond hair, and his slender figure were impossible not to notice, and he looked more like he was preparing for a model shoot than standing guard over George. The moment he saw me, he stood up more stiffly and nodded his head.

“Sir,” he said embarrassedly. “I haven’t seen anyone coming or going since you left.”

“Ta, Smith,” I said curtly. “I’ve got a few more questions to ask George. Are you all right to have another look around when I speak to him? Harrold has told me the CCTV doesn’t work here, so we won’t have the cameras to rely on.”

Elijah’s body drooped, and he looked as though he longed to release a sigh of complaint, but instead, he gave me a weak smile.
