Chapter 11

Santorini’s interior design made you feel as if you’d escaped to the Greek isles, and I’ve always loved it. There was something so cheerful about the stark white tables and bright blue linens offset with little candles. As I walked in, I saw Ben had already been seated at a booth. I clamped down on my nervousness and forced myself to smile.

I’d taken a little time to change clothes after getting my window fixed. What? I knew it wasn’t a date, but this guy was gorgeous! The host seated me across from Ben and slid a menu in front of me.

“Thanks for meeting me here,” Ben said. “I missed lunch, and food has been the only thing on my mind. By the time I got out of my meeting with the chief, I barely had time to make it here.”

“I’m guessing the meeting had to do with that hit piece in the Times?”

“For sure,” he said, scrubbing his hands on the side of his head. “I’m not sure where he got his information, but most of it’s wrong. You can’t ever trust a reporter.”

I swallowed hard and tried not to let my disappointment show. Ben noticed my reaction and smiled.

“Present company excluded. You’ve been honest with me and fair in your coverage. So far, anyway. It just always feels like reporters and cops are at odds, and we usually are, truth be told.”

“I think it’s better to work as a team,” I said, tracing the condensation on my glass with my finger. “We’re all working towards the same goal. I don’t think it’s necessary to be adversaries.”

“Well, if the rest of your colleagues could be like that, it would be just fine with me.”

Our server arrived to take our orders. I hadn’t even cracked the menu since I already knew what I wanted. You could never go wrong with a Greek salad piled high with feta cheese. I’d discovered this place when I first moved here in college, and it had quickly become a favorite.

Ben ordered the souvlaki with a side of pita bread, reminding me it never hurt to get extra pita. I asked for some too before our server left.

“So, I heard from a source today, and I’m sorry, but I can’t share their name. They passed along some interesting information. Once I saw it, I knew I had to go to you. This is way over my head and possibly super illegal.”

“Tell me more,” Ben said, leaning closer to me.

I pulled the file out of my bag and slid it across the table.

“So, it looks like, according to these documents, Mark Brown was embezzling small amounts from his clients. Alone, they aren’t much, but across the board and with how often it occurred, it’s actually a big amount of money.”

Ben opened the folders and started going through the columns. He looked thoughtful, and I couldn’t help but stare at the way he bit his lip while he read.

“Interesting. What else did your source have?”

“They think the bank manager, Gerald Harms, is involved too.
