‘That was kind,’ Doris said as Georgina walked down the wide, sweeping staircase with Ellen. ‘And I know this isn’t the place or the time, but I have more to tell you about Anne. I was with you in the Muniments Room, so I know what you found out. I went looking for her – she was in the garden, near the lavender – and I asked her some questions.’

Georgina nodded, knowing that Doris would see the gesture and know she understood. Now definitely wasn’t the time or place to have a conversation with a ghost.

In the kitchen, Posy put the kettle on; she made Ellen a cup of green tea and a hummus, falafel and rocket sandwich, garnished with baby plum tomatoes.

‘We’re not going to talk at you,’ she said gently, ‘because we lost our mum and we know how crap it feels to be in your shoes, and people just won’t shut up. So we’ll be quiet – but we’re here if you want to talk, or want a hug, or if you want to rant and scream, OK?’

Ellen looked at her, and a tear ran down her cheek. ‘I was horrible to you yesterday. I made out you…’ She choked on the words.

‘You were in shock and you’re grieving. We know you didn’t mean what you said,’ Hattie said. ‘Yes, I admit, Posy and I didn’t get on so well with your mother, and that must’ve made life hard for you. I’m sorry for that.’

‘Me too,’ Posy said. ‘We should’ve tried harder.’

‘But we’re here. And we can stay with you when the police talk to you, if you want our support,’ Hattie said.

A shudder racked Ellen’s body. ‘And there’s all the arrangements to make. The fu—’ She clearly couldn’t finish the word.

‘We’ll help. We won’t take over, but we know what we needed to do for our mother, so we can help you. If you want us to do anything, then of course we will,’ Posy said. She gave the younger woman a hug. ‘The main thing right now is that you know you’re not alone.’

Another tear spilled down Ellen’s cheek. ‘I don’t deserve…’

‘Yes, you do. It’s fine,’ Hattie said.

‘We’ll leave you now,’ Sybbie said gently.

Georgina took a business card out of her bag. ‘Here’s my number, Ellen, when you want to talk about bats and photographs. Or if you want to talk to me about anything else.’

‘Thank you,’ Ellen said, putting it into the pocket of her jeans. ‘And thank you for…’ She welled up and shook her head, unable to speak.

Georgina gave her a hug. ‘Any time. Take care.’
