âThat was kind,â Doris said as Georgina walked down the wide, sweeping staircase with Ellen. âAnd I know this isnât the place or the time, but I have more to tell you about Anne. I was with you in the Muniments Room, so I know what you found out. I went looking for her â she was in the garden, near the lavender â and I asked her some questions.â
Georgina nodded, knowing that Doris would see the gesture and know she understood. Now definitely wasnât the time or place to have a conversation with a ghost.
In the kitchen, Posy put the kettle on; she made Ellen a cup of green tea and a hummus, falafel and rocket sandwich, garnished with baby plum tomatoes.
âWeâre not going to talk at you,â she said gently, âbecause we lost our mum and we know how crap it feels to be in your shoes, and people just wonât shut up. So weâll be quiet â but weâre here if you want to talk, or want a hug, or if you want to rant and scream, OK?â
Ellen looked at her, and a tear ran down her cheek. âI was horrible to you yesterday. I made out youâ¦â She choked on the words.
âYou were in shock and youâre grieving. We know you didnât mean what you said,â Hattie said. âYes, I admit, Posy and I didnât get on so well with your mother, and that mustâve made life hard for you. Iâm sorry for that.â
âMe too,â Posy said. âWe shouldâve tried harder.â
âBut weâre here. And we can stay with you when the police talk to you, if you want our support,â Hattie said.
A shudder racked Ellenâs body. âAnd thereâs all the arrangements to make. The fuââ She clearly couldnât finish the word.
âWeâll help. We wonât take over, but we know what we needed to do for our mother, so we can help you. If you want us to do anything, then of course we will,â Posy said. She gave the younger woman a hug. âThe main thing right now is that you know youâre not alone.â
Another tear spilled down Ellenâs cheek. âI donât deserveâ¦â
âYes, you do. Itâs fine,â Hattie said.
âWeâll leave you now,â Sybbie said gently.
Georgina took a business card out of her bag. âHereâs my number, Ellen, when you want to talk about bats and photographs. Or if you want to talk to me about anything else.â
âThank you,â Ellen said, putting it into the pocket of her jeans. âAnd thank you forâ¦â She welled up and shook her head, unable to speak.
Georgina gave her a hug. âAny time. Take care.â
