Chapter 20

Michael opened the door to the back offices for Jenessa and Allison. “Ladies.”

His jaw appeared tight as he spoke, his tone as if they were strangers. Had Detective Provenza told him what she had been up to? He had to have. Otherwise how would George have explained to Michael why she and Allison Reagan needed to meet with them right now?

Jenessa peered up at Michael as she slipped through the doorway, followed by Allison. He did not meet her gaze, but seemed to avoid her. He called to the receptionist, “Ruby, hold our calls,” before closing the door.

“Hello, Miss Jones,” Detective Provenza greeted, getting up from his desk. “And you must be Allison Reagan.”

“I am.”

“Michael, why don’t we take Miss Reagan into the conference room to talk to her?” Provenza directed. “Jenessa, you know you can’t be in on this part.”

Yes, she knew that, but she had hoped she could at least observe the interrogation from behind the two-way mirror. “The observation room?” she asked, her eyebrows lifted with hope.

“Not this time,” Michael said. “We have to do this by the book. You’ll have to wait out front and we’ll talk after the interview.”

Jenessa wanted to plead her case, but it was evident from the expression on his face that he was angry with her. She turned to Provenza. “George? Please? For my story.”

“I’d like to say yes,” he snuck a quick look at Michael’s stern expression, “but you’d better go wait out front.”

“But, George—”

“We sincerely do appreciate all you’ve done.” He looked over at Michael. “Don’t we?”

Michael gave a slight nod and an irritated grunt, his eyes focused on his partner.

“See, he agrees.” Provenza gave her an apologetic smile. “Now maybe we can catch the SOB that killed that boy.”

Jenessa rested her hand on Allison’s shoulder. The woman’s brows were knit into a frown, as if she were nervous to tell the police all she’d seen that night. Or was it Chet she was afraid of?

“Don’t worry, Allison.” Jenessa patted her shoulder lightly. “Just tell them what you told me. They’ll take care of the rest.”

Allison nodded. She stood up straight and squared her shoulders. “I will.”

“Thank you, Jenessa.” Michael’s voice and his expression softened a bit. “You must have put a lot of time and effort into investigating this case and convincing Ms. Reagan to come in.”

“You’re welcome.” She mustered up a small smile. “I did. It’s my job.”

They all filed out of the detectives’ office. Jenessa went to the left and the rest of them headed down the hall to the right.

After a little more than an hour, with Jenessa still seated in the reception area, Allison came through the door, followed by the two detectives. She wore an expression of relief at having two decades of weight lifted off her shoulders.

Jenessa stood from her chair, proud of Allison for giving her testimony in the face of fear. She cautiously strolled toward them. “So, what’s next?”

“We’ll bring Chet Monahan in for questioning,” Provenza said.

“What about me?” Allison asked, uncertainty quivering in her voice.
