It’s best to try with a small sample, and see if there really is something to your idea first. My friend, Chris Chung, recently commented to me at a game designer night that he was really happy with what he thought was about 25% of an idea that he brought to the table. He hashed this out with a few other designers, and lo and behold, less than an hour later he had a really solid foundation to start from.

You’re Only Testing a Concept at this Point

When you’re putting together your MVP, you’re really trying to answer the question “does this idea work?” You’re trying to get a feel for whether the mechanics you thought of applying will fit. You’re also checking to see whether your idea conveys the experience you are intending for players.
