Stormwind stared down at the wreckage of the camp almost a half mile away. He had not stopped running from the moment the thing ruptured out of Rosethorn’s chest. What was it? How had she been alive with that thing inside of her? He just did not know. He had no answers.

Down at the base of the hill he could see the Bär-geist walking up towards him. Its dark form lumbered slowly forward, plodding towards him as if it had all the time in the world. He could see that there was something between its teeth. It glittered and sparkled in the early morning sunlight.

He turned away from it and looked south. There, at the edge of the horizon, he could just make out the green forests of Halsbren that marked the end of the Wild lands. To his east, the massive Lugos Mountains loomed near, and from his vantage he could just make out the slate grey silhouette of Strie-Kÿr. If he went south, he could be within Halsbren in less than five days. From there he could be back home in the Shemma within three weeks, and away from the madness.

He looked back east. If he went that way, he would be at Strie-Kÿr by nightfall. There he would find Militär, and it was very likely that he would die.

The Elf looked back south. He had journeyed this far through the Wild lands unabated. He could likely make it out of them equally unhindered. He could just leave, as Rosethorn suggested, and return to his people. Carmella was gone. Bray was gone. What did it matter? It was a human affair, and one he had no business being part of. His blue eyes drifted once more to the monolith that was Strie-Kÿr.

He had told Carmella that he would save her son. Had he meant it only to appease a woman he was enamored with, or did he really mean it? Carmella was gone. Captured? Maybe. Dead, more likely. Bray too was gone, and Stormwind had the hound of death following him through the Wild lands. Perhaps he should just take the hint. Besides, it had sounded like they did not want to hurt Militär anyway; in fact, far from it. It sounded as if they almost worshipped the boy.

Why?

Stormwind felt the warm presence of the Bär-geist behind him. He turned to regard the large black beast. Its large flaming eyes stared at him passively, and the dog panted lightly from its exertion up the hill.

The Elf looked to see what was between its teeth. As he did, the Bär-geist let the item go. The sharp tip of a narrow blade dropped down and sunk itself softly into the aureate field.

Stormwind stared at the bottom of the swirling leaf designed cross guard. He reached down slowly and removed the weapon from the dirt. He looked at the ornately designed etching that ran the length of the silvery blade. Scored across the glistening weapon were twin lightning bolts facing all the way down to the bladed tip.
