Chapter 64 – What’s After?

“I will not die before my time,” Madeline whispered under her breath. She opened her eyes slowly and noticed that the sun was already up. It was bright enough to signify the incoming arrival of the afternoon, which meant she still had a couple hours left before she had to leave. She threw the blankets off her and sat at the edge of the bed, scratching her hair and taking deep, methodical breaths. She could hear Dinah rustling around outside her bedroom, but she wasn’t ready to conversate yet.

“I will not die before my time,” she said again, staring down at the floor. It was a concept from her grandfather’s Bible, and it had always interested her. This notion that there was a set period of time in which a person lived—a pre-ordained number of days that God had laid out, and supposedly—she surmised because of free will–it was possible for a person to cut that time short through their detrimental actions. For example, someone who lived simply and cautiously may see the age of 80, but if they were to join a gang in the Underworld, they could be dead by 20. On the flip side, a person, through no fault of their own, could be preordained to die at 2 years of age. Either way, God was said to be in control. But how did he make the distinctions? If he knew that the former person was going to live only until 20, why give him an 80-year-old lifespan at all? It wasn’t like their lifespans were revealed to others afterwards as a point of reference.

In the end, she decided that no matter what your lifespan was, it was all up to the individual to decide. She had faced death already, and she fought for her right to continue. Today would be no different. Whether it was the fourth trial, or the prison break, she had to have confidence in herself and the people around her. Otherwise, what was the point of living at all?

“Alright, I’m up,” she said to herself. She stood to her feet and got dressed quickly, opting for function over fashion, and then she walked out into the hallway, waving to Dinah who was busy pacing away.

“Digging your own hole?” Madeline chuckled. “The floor’s getting worn.”

“They can take it out of my salary,” Dinah said. “Oh wait, I don’t get one.”

“And yet our lives are on the line.”

“Just another day in Paradise,” Dinah smiled.

“You were up late.”

“Yeah, I’ve been working on my specialty. I need to be able to put someone to sleep with a touch. It would be useful in the field.”

“Sure would. Hey, did you happen to hear anything on the fourth trial?”

“I scanned the dreams of the Arcana as they slept, but a lot of them stayed up, hanging out and stuff. A lot of them know that they have to pass this trial to stay at the castle.”

“Yeah, we have to pass this too.”

“We will...by the way, Amias came by while you were sleeping.
