Chapter Nineteen

Zoe could finally feel her limbs coming back under her control. She turned her head with a great amount of effort to look at Kat. She was still under the influence of the drug the Elders had used on them. Zoe was used to this feeling. She had felt the effects of this horrible drug many times as she grew up. It was made from an herb that they grew in their private gardens that allowed them to completely incapacitate a person in seconds. It was their way of inflicting punishment on those that didn’t follow the rules. Zoe was constantly fighting against those rules, and so she was more than aware of how this worked. But Kat, she didn’t know what was going on. Even though she couldn’t move, Zoe could see the abject fright in her eyes. Zoe imagined a million horrible thoughts were going through her mind.

“It will be ok,” Zoe croaked out, the effort of speaking those few words nearly wiped her out. It wouldn’t be much longer before the effects would completely wear off and then she could give her friend an explanation of what was going on. She felt horribly guilty for dragging her into this.

Zoe heard the door to the room they were in open, though she had no more energy to move her face in the direction of the noise. She wiggled her fingers. Her control was slowly working its way up her arms. She heard Kat utter a strangled whine, and she knew the effects were starting to wear off of her as well.

“You are in a lot of trouble young lady.”

Zoe clenched her eyes shut. She knew who that voice belonged to. It had been years since she had heard it, but the very sound of it made her face hot. The disappointment in the voice made tears form behind her eyes.

“Papa,” Zoe said, forcing the word out as she struggled to look at him. His eyes were as hard as they always were, and a crystalline blue just like hers.

“Don’t try to talk Emma,” her dad said, shaking his head. He paused for a moment. “I suppose you are used to being called Zoe now, as I understand it.”

There was so much that Zoe wanted to say to him. She wanted to explain herself, to plead her case. But even if her mouth would have worked properly to form the words, she knew that her father wouldn’t be swayed.

“The Elder’s are trying to figure out what to do with you,” her father said. “If you cooperate, they may just let you live. I hope you will be sensible.”

“I…,” Zoe tried to speak but it was too much for her. She felt her arms moving more freely and she lifted one up, reaching out for her father.

“I’ve done everything I can for you,” her father said. “Now it is up to you to help yourself.”

Zoe was able to turn her head now, able to look fully at her father as he turned his back on her and walked out of the room.
