Chapter Thirteen

SHORTLY AFTER DAWN, BRYNN woke to loud, persistent thumping on her bedroom door. She gave an ear-popping yawn and glanced out the nearest window. The sky was pale gray with little sunlight, one of the dull, snowy dawns she’d grown accustomed to in Winterwail.

The thumping grew more urgent. “Consort Woodwarden? I must speak with you.”

Brynn recognized Kraal’s gruff voice. She threw off the fur blankets and dragged herself out of bed, grateful she’d fallen asleep in her nightgown. Slowly, she shuffled into her slippers and trudged toward the door on leaden legs.

She opened the door to see Kraal waiting in the hallway. The frost giant was dressed in tailored blue slacks and a neatly buttoned white and gold vest. Her posture was rigid and her face politely blank. She carried no weapon, but after watching her fight to defend Valis’ carriage, Brynn knew she didn’t need one.
