Part 11

The best ice cream and Italian food in Nuuk is from a small restaurant called Italiamut, a short walk from Greenland’s National Library. I parked in a space right outside, congratulated myself on parking so close, then waited for Luui to agree. I forgot she was five, and beyond worrying about her father, there was little else on her mind apart from ice cream. Snow settled on the windscreen as soon as I turned the engine off and the wipers stopped. I helped Luui out of the backseat and raced her to the restaurant door. Luui rushed to the glass front of the ice cream cabinet as soon as we stepped inside, curling around the round glass-topped tables and empty metal chairs while I pulled out my smartphone. The radio provided some atmosphere, filling the empty restaurant with DJ chatter. I smiled at the teenager behind the counter as Luui pressed her nose to the glass. But my mind was wandering as I wondered who I could call for help when Atii was covering the depot door, and Gaba was coordinating the hostage situation? I paid for Luui’s ice cream – a double scoop of banana and mint – took a breath, then dialled the first number I could think of. Luui squirmed on the chair opposite me as we sat down at a table in the window, and Sergeant Duneq answered my call.

Sergeant Kiiu ‘George’ Duneq has never been my first choice for anything, and if I had been given the choice, I would never have picked him as my supervisor. On the rare occasions I realised he was being supportive, my friends and colleagues tried to convince me he had my best interests at heart. Instead, I focused on his grumpy side, his physical attributes I noticed when feeling vindictive, and the list of things he had done to make my life as difficult as possible, including weekend shifts, prisoner escort assignments, moving my desk to the dustiest and busiest part of Nuuk police station, among many, many other things.

But when he answered my call, after the initial tension I felt every time I talked to him, I realised he was listening.

“I’ve tried everything short of contacting Nissik’s family in Tasiilaq.”

“They haven’t got a phone,” he said. “I sent a unit from Tasiilaq, but no one’s home.”

I processed that for a minute, as I realised we were all working on this together, and then continued.

“His friends say he stopped taking his medication.” I waved at Luui to be quiet as she tried to catch my attention. “And his reports confirm he was referred to a doctor during his first year at gymnasium. But apart from that, beyond hearing him shout Maaria’s name at night, no one knows who she is or…”

Luui slipped off her chair and reached for my arm.

“You’ve dropped your ice cream,” I said as I lowered the phone from my ear. “Just don’t step in it.”

“But the radio,” Luui said.

“I’m on the phone, Luui. I’m talking to Sergeant Duneq.
