Chapter Eight

A week passed, and she hadn’t spoken to Trent. They’d never gone so long without talking, and she missed him—they were best friends. But she wasn’t ready to forgive the things he said or what he had done. He called her a whore, in Norwegian no less. That wasn’t his birthright unless he had read up on the language. People always learn the bad words of a new language first, that’s all.

She played it over every which way in her head but couldn’t find a solution on why he would act that way. They’d never been anything more than friends, and to be honest, not seeing him with anyone usually made her think he was gay. She never broached the subject because if he wanted her to know he’d tell her, and it wasn’t her business. It wouldn’t make a difference because she loved him, but jealousy over her relationship with Lazarus? It still floored her.

Now she was in the car with Lazarus, and they sped away from the city toward Muir Woods. He told her that the location of the main house the pack used for meeting was there, and that was their destination. Her stomach clenched nervously. Why had she accepted to go? He wanted her to meet the pack as his mate but she didn’t know if she was ready for that or the fact that he’d committed himself to her so completely. There were so many variables, obstacles that could stand between them, and the main one was the primal feelings that Ivy was convinced were caused by Lazarus. Yet she was in his car, and he drove seamlessly using one hand to steer and the other to hold her hand.

“You don’t have to worry.” Lazarus lifted her hand and kissed it. “It’s very informal.”

“Do you sit in the ‘grand poobah’ chair, and they come to your feet with their issues?” Ivy asked.

Lazarus laughed. “You have a very skewed notion about how pack life works.”

“Pardon me, but I’ve never been to one of these things. Humans aren’t usually allowed, am I correct?” Ivy pointed out. “Plus, it’s not like Dad and Eric have been invited to Kristoff’s round table meetings.”

“I understand what you mean,” Lazarus said. “Like I said, informal. We sit around a big bonfire and eat. Then grab a beer or two with each other, and as people need to talk to me, they come over to the picnic table all casual like.”

“Understood. Do I sit beside you and stroke your neck?” Ivy teased.

“That would be appreciated.” Lazarus grinned.

She punched his arm. “Next you’ll want me to call you my liege.”

“Nothing so formal. My king, the conqueror of my body, would suffice,” he answered.

“Yeah, you may be waiting a long time for that one,” she replied.

She didn’t see the driveway when he turned because it was hidden between tall trees. There was no lighting along the gravel path, and Ivy understood that they probably didn’t want anyone to notice the lights from the road and turning on to their property.
