12. New Arrivals

Our daughter, Primrose, was born in February 2015. Previously I had found it easy to be away from home, travelling for my photography. Now, every day away came at the cost of missing Primrose grow up. I become much more selective with my projects.

Nat took a year of maternity leave and we were keen to use the time to travel as a family. When Primrose turned six months old, we took her to South Luangwa for a ten-day trial safari. She loved watching giraffes and elephants, but found lions sleeping in the shade of a bush rather dull.

A few weeks later we travelled to Liuwa Plain National Park, in the west of Zambia, for six weeks. My main objective was to expand my portfolio of nocturnal wildlife photographs. Despite the challenges of travelling with an infant, it was a productive trip and proved that I was able to conduct projects in the remotest corners of Africa without leaving my family behind.

But back in the UK, as Camtraptions grew, it was becoming harder for me to go off-grid. In 2016, Nat returned to part-time work. I barely travelled at all and my photography more or less came to a standstill as I focussed on my commitments at home.

2017 started with the happy news that Meg was pregnant and would be going on maternity leave in eight months’ time. By now, she was critical to almost every aspect of Camtraptions, from bookkeeping to managing our supply chain. How would I ever find someone capable of covering for her? It seemed I was looking at the prospect of putting my photography on hold indefinitely.
