Well that hadn’t been very helpful. I pulled the lever on the side of the seat to lower the back and closed my eyes. I figured I’d take the little rest that I could, and I might see Lallo in my dreams. Just before falling asleep, I felt Kodi’s hand close around mine. I smiled and drifted away.

Voices brought me back to myself and my eyes adjusted quickly to the darkness. We were stopped before a security gate and Kodi was telling the Native American guard his name and that Moki had sent for us. “I’m sorry,” the guard was saying, “your name isn’t on my list, and Moki is not here.” The man looked like he hadn’t smiled in years and his nose looked flat like he’d been hit there very hard and it had never healed. Kodi cursed under his breath and looked at me for a moment before turning back to the guard.

“Can you try Meghan Carter?” he asked. The guard took another look at his clipboard before pressing a button somewhere inside the door of the small wooden shack and the gate rose to let us through. Kodi thanked the man before slowly driving onward. There were many buildings that seemed to be made of wood, almost like an old mom-and-pop town, which was rare to see in California.

“You’d think we were driving onto a military base,” I remarked. Kodi shook his head.

“White Point is a protected reservation. Not only Native Americans live here, but Moki likes to make sure it stays protected so he likes to keep track on who comes in or out,” he explained. That made sense. A thought occurred to me.

“When Moki was addressing the Summit, he said that the peace here was about to be broken. Why would Lallo’s disappearance cause people to fight?” I asked, but before he could reply, I added, “I would think a crisis would pull the community together, especially since Moki said Lallo was pretty much loved by all.”

“He wasn’t talking about the peace failing among the people in general; he was referring to the peace between the werewolves and the humans,” he said while looking at me. I knew that I was missing something. I looked at him dumbly and hoped he’d continue. He must have caught on because I didn’t have to wait long. “Lallo’s human. His father didn’t do it and nobody is offering up any confessions.” I watched his face shut down before he said, “When something monstrous happens to one of your own, it’s easy to point fingers at the only monsters you know.”

My blood went cold. The people of White Point were blaming the werewolves for what happened to Lallo. What if it was a wolf that was responsible?

“I’m not a detective, Kodi. I just don’t understand how I can possibly help the situation by being here,” I sighed in frustration. He didn’t respond and I wasn’t surprised. Really, what could he say? He had no more answers than I did.
