Chapter Twenty-Two

Ruins (Elias)

Kovan and Elias arrived at the docks in the early morning and convinced a small fishing vessel, called the Aberden, to take them to the south shores, beneath the ruins of Ash Field. The ship was grimy and smelled with years of fish guts baked into the decks, but it was fast. When they arrived, they had to anchor offshore from their destination. The old pier was too dangerous to get close to, having long ago crumbled into the sea. In it’s place remained a jagged wreckage of large, splintered wood sticking out of the surface of the waves like thorns on a bush. They were now death spikes for ships that ventured near.

As the green sails of the Aberden dropped to the boom and were being tied off, they drifted to the land in a small white boat, rowed by one of the crew members. Gentle waves propelled them in, while the craft took in small laps of sea water on its course to the sandy shore. The odd rust colored beach stretched for roughly a league along the coast. The color, another mystery from the past. Forgotten, like so many other things in the world. There were several legends about the area, but any truth they contained couldn’t be substantiated. Depending on who you asked, either the Light’s wrath destroyed the city of sin or sunfire engulfed the city to defeat a plague of the walking dead. It existed now as a lingering shadow of the past. A barren wasteland of blackened territh and dead trees.

The wind was breezy, but Elias pulled the hood off his head to feel the air. His eyes fixated on the rising hill above the sands where the sun blasted off pillars of stone. Some were free standing still, but most toppled over and interlaced with others. The old world’s pierced heart stretched out before them. While they knew very little, Ash Field was undoubtedly the location for an ancient city destroyed in a forgotten war.

“What are you hoping to find?” Kovan asked from his side.

“I want to see how extensive the dig was,” Elias answered.

“Didn’t you find the entrance originally? I figured you searched the place a long time ago?”

“No, I thought I sensed a chamber below the ruins. Lavaren and I told Ellaria about it. The Guild quickly seized the opportunity to bring a team in. They didn’t want me to have the first chance at it, after the escapade at the Sagean’s Palace. They didn’t trust me.”

“Was it Lavaren or Ellaria who went behind you?”

“At the time I believed it was Ellaria, but it was Lavaren. He trusted too many people in the Guild. As their Regent, he believed they all fell in line with what he wanted. They pressured him to go forward with the excavation. More and more I became wary of him and our partnership disintegrated. I stopped working with the Guild altogether and would simply send things I found to Ellaria directly.”

“So, they were
