Chapter 3

Artful Deception

It takes Odin some time to make preparations for dealing with Fenrir, and when all is ready, still he waits for the right moment.

One afternoon when the Gods are gathered in the palace courtyard and Fenrir comes in for his nap, Odin calls out, “Fenrir, I’ve heard tales of your mighty strength and was hoping you’d entertain us with a demonstration.”

Fenrir, somewhat wary of his strength since the incident with the boar, asks, “How do you wish me to show you?”

Odin picks up a thick rope of twisted hemp, the strongest fiber that can be used for rope. “Can you escape being bound by this rope?”

Fenrir, knowing full well he could snap that rope easily, says, “I will try.”

And so Odin binds him to a tree. When he’s done, Fenrir, who has razor sharp teeth, chomps the rope once in his enormous jaw, slicing the fibers easily. He’s instantly free and the crowd applauds.

Odin says, “The sharpness of your teeth is impressive, but can you escape a metal chain?” With this, Odin holds up a thick chain of bronze, with links as large as his hand.

Fenrir observes the weakness in the links, the gaps where they should have been soldered, but the links are still heavy and strong. Now Fenrir has a secret that even Odin doesn’t know. His size isn’t merely due to his inheritance from his Giantess mother. His father, the Demigod Loki, passed down the ability to grow and even shrink his body at will. So Fenrir knows that even if he can’t break the links, he can simply shrink to the size of a mouse and escape that way. With this in mind, he answers readily, “I will try.”

Odin wraps Fenrir in the heavy chain and binds him to the tree, using a large lock to close the ends of the chain together. When he’s done, Fenrir lunges forward, the great oak tree bends under the force, the bronze links crunch and groan, until they break, clattering to the ground around him. Fenrir stands tall and proud as the Gods exclaim excitedly over how he snapped the chain with his mighty strength.

Odin says, “The strength of your body is impressive, but I wonder if your magic is as extraordinary. Can you escape a chain forged by the Dwarves?” Odin holds out a silvery rope, so fine and delicate that it seems translucent in the hazy summer air.

Fenrir, being inexperienced in the trickery of the Gods and a bit arrogant in the knowledge of his secret, pauses for just one moment before saying, “I will try.”

Odin wraps Fenrir in the diaphanous material and this time, while exclaiming in dismay over the bent tree, Odin binds him to a massive boulder protruding from the mountainside. He steps back to let Fenrir try his tricks.

Fenrir leaps forward with all his might but surprisingly, the thin cord holds him, cutting into his flesh before giving a hint of breaking. Yipping in pain, Fenrir stops pulling, and instead shrinks down to the size of a hare to dash away and lick his wounds.
