Chapter Nine: Samantha

“Hi, honey,” Rebecca Parker said as Sam walked into Cauldron and Broomstick. “Did you enjoy your lunch?”

“It was great, Mom. At least it was until....ah, never mind. It’s not important.” Sam slid behind the counter and handed a brown paper bag to her mom. “I got you the blueberry muffins you wanted. That should be enough to last you the rest of the year.”

Rebecca laughed. “I didn’t order that many. They just have such delicious muffins at the bakery down the street. Nowhere else in the city even comes close.”

“Enjoy them, Mom,” Sam smiled. “In fact, enjoy your retirement. I don’t know why you keep coming in here a couple of times a week. You’ve earned your time off, believe me.”

“You don’t want me around?” Rebecca winked, teasing.

“You know that’s not true. I just want you to do what you love.”

“Coming here and spending time with you is what I love. Besides, I’m not here every day. I spend time with my girlfriends.”

“And get arrested for dancing naked in Central Park on Halloween.”

“One time, five years ago, and you won’t let me forget it.”

“It was embarrassing. Right after high school graduation, most of my friends still in town, and some of them saw you.”

“I hope they enjoyed the show,” Rebecca replied, a smug smile on her face.

Sam had no doubt any guys who saw her mom that night loved it. Rebecca was only 48 years old at the time, and she took good care of herself. She was slim, toned, and looked 15 years younger, even now. In fact, she looked like a slightly older version of Sam, not like a mother at all, but more like a sister. At 53 years old, Rebecca could easily pass for 35.

It didn’t make having your mom seen naked in public any less embarrassing, however.

“You’re so not funny,” Sam said, shaking her head, but smiling.

“I so am. Oh, by the way, a delivery came for you while you were out. I think it will cheer you up.”

“Who says I need cheering up?”

“Mothers always know. It’s in the back. Go take a look.”

Sam shrugged and headed to the break room in the back of the store. Who would be sending her anything? She hadn’t ordered a thing, which meant someone sent her a gift. It wasn’t her birthday or Christmas, so what could it be?

One glance at the giant pile of pink roses taking up every inch of the break room table gave her the answer. Eric. Oh, and there was a massive box of chocolates there, too. Wonderful.

How many roses were in that mound? Two dozen? Three? More? She couldn’t even count them all. She lifted the edge of the rectangular chocolate box and peeked inside. Gourmet truffles from that fancy store downtown, the one where she could never afford even one truffle on her own. Like the flowers, the truffles seemed to go on and on, vast amounts stacked in God knew how many layers in that gold-leafed box.

Sam promptly
