Chapter 9

An SUV was waiting at the end of the runway on William Langley’s ranch in the beautiful Colorado Rockies near Leadville.

Fiona couldn’t deny her excitement. She’d barely been out of Texas in all of her twenty-four years. Colorado had been on her wish list since she’d first seen pictures of the snow-covered mountains in the National Geographic magazines she’d read in the library at school. Having grown up near Temptation, Texas and gone to college in Lubbock, mountains weren’t something she saw every day, or every year, for that matter.

Gage handled the aircraft with skill, maneuvering through the mountains to land it with ease on Langley’s private runway.

Fiona had slept the first hour, exhausted from her sleepless night cleaning up after the busted hot water heater. But once they came within sight of the mountains, she’d woken up and stayed awake, asking so many questions, she was certain Gage would wish he’d gone stag.

The drive from the landing strip to the stately mansion perched on the side of a hill wound through hills covered in aspens and evergreens. As they neared Langley’s country retreat, Fiona’s mouth dropped open and her heart fluttered. “It’s beautiful.”

The structure was made of stone and cedar, with huge windows overlooking the mountains and valleys. A tent was set up in front of the house and master grills were smoking in the clear mountain air.

Gage climbed out first and extended a hand to her.

She let him pull her to her feet. That electric jolt powered through her where their hands connected. Even after she stood on firm ground, he didn’t release her.

An older man with a shock of white hair stepped away from a group and met them halfway across the yard. “Gage, glad you could make it.”

Gage—Fiona had to remind herself that everyone would refer to him as Gage, not Austin. It still rankled that he’d hidden his true identity from her when he’d shown up as her match from Leslie’s system.

“Mr. Langley, this is my girlfriend, Fiona McKenzie.”

She smiled. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Langley.”

The older man took her hand in both of his and raised it to his lips. “The pleasure is mine.” Then he pressed a brief kiss to her skin.

“Gage, darling. I was beginning to think you’d never get here.” A beautiful woman dressed in neatly pressed, designer jeans, flowing white blouse and leather boots that most likely cost more than Fiona's broken-down car. Her long, luxurious, ebony hair was pulled back from her forehead and fell in sleek, straight strands that hung halfway down her back.

She hooked her arm through Gage’s and pressed her full breasts against him. She barely glanced at Fiona, her nose tilting upward instead. “Come, there’s someone here you’ll want to say hello to.”

The hairs on the back of Fiona’s neck rose and her fingers curled into fists. She had the sudden urged to sink her nails into the woman face. The visceral reaction shocked Fiona. She’d never felt quite so much animosity toward any one person and it seemed to stem from the way the woman hung on Gage’s body.
