Chapter Fifteen

Abbie

“Let’s gooo!” Jude bounces around on her bed. “I wanna go now.”

“We’re leaving soon,” I assure her, laughing at her craziness. “Trust me, I wish we could be gone right now, too.”

“So why aren’t we?”

“Your dad has a few things to tie up here in the city before we go.”

“Ugh.” Jude throws herself backwards onto her pile of pillows and groans. “That means it’s going to take forever. Forever, Abbie!”

“It’ll be fine,” I tell her, but inside I’m just as anxious to leave. NYC has really taken it out of me. I’ve had a long, hectic day playing tourist with Jude and enough awful encounters with Natasha to last a lifetime, while things with Graham have been a fucking roller coaster.

But it’s all been worth it, because now we have an understanding. And I know that he finally believes me. He won’t tell me who the leak is, which is infuriating, but I don’t think it’s Esmeralda anymore—and he didn’t call out Natasha either, which means it likely wasn’t her…I think. Unless that’s why we’re leaving, under the guise of getting Jude back to her horses?

“Do you think Desi misses me?” Jude rolls over on her stomach and picks at the comforter.

“Absolutely,” I reassure her, smoothing her wild hair. “In fact, the second we get home, we can go right to the stables so you can see her.”

“Okay.” Jude looks at me very seriously. “And can we ask Cassie about setting up some trail rides?”

“Of course. We’ll go on all the rides and picnics your little heart desires,” I promise.

I poke at her and she giggles. “Desi will never know you left.”

Her face falls a little. “Are you sure she won’t be upset with me?”

“Oh, Jude.” I suppress a laugh and throw my arms around her. “None of the horses will be mad at you. They’re going to be so happy to see you back in the stables, I promise.”

She chews on her lip. “I hope you’re right.”

“Aren’t I always? Now. You need to finish packing your bags so we can head right out once your dad gets back, okay? Chop-chop.”

“Ugh.” Jude heaves a big sigh and rolls out of bed, flinging open her suitcase dramatically. “This day is going to take forever.”

“It’ll go faster once you start packing.” My phone buzzes in my pocket and I sneak a look. It’s my dad. For once, I’m not dreading that I have to answer his call, because I actually have good news for him. “I need to call my dad back, okay? Get packing. I mean it.”

“Do I have to? I have so many clothes there. Aren’t we coming back after this weekend?”

“Yes. And if you really want to leave your things here, that’s up to you, I guess. But then we’ll have to leave poor Sugar Cube here all alone, and—”

“No!” Jude shrieks. “I’ll pack! I’ll pack!”

“Good.” I pat her on the head and hurry back to my room to dial my dad’s number.

“There you are,” he answers after the first ring.
