Battle of the Serapis

September 23, 1779

For many years, British warships were seen as the most powerful in the world. In an attempt to fight this huge fleet, the Patriots built a navy of privateers. These sailors allowed their personal ships to be used by the Continental army. Colonists hoped these ships would attempt to keep British trade and supply vessels from reaching their intended ports.

Fighting on the water changed after France joined the war. In 1779 colonial Captain John Paul Jones was given command of a French ship called the USS Bonhomme Richard. He piloted the ship around Great Britain’s coast, seeking British vessels to engage in battle.
