I checked my watch, and it said 8 pm.

I wanted a cocktail, a martini, stirred and not shaken, unlike Bond’s order. Halfway through my drink, the waiter showed up with a small and sad plate of nuts and olives that squirrels in The Common would have shanked a tourist for, but I was grateful. It was like sympathy sex. You didn’t ask why; you accepted it with dignity.

I’d been stood up.

And I lived with her, so this was awkward.

The plate swiped clean, I started to hate the burgundy leather chair, the rich red drapes, and the scarlet wallpaper because it made me feel like a bull in the ring with the toreador. I checked the time again. I felt the stares of the wait staff. Screw this.

I raised my hand.

I ordered myself a filet mignon.
