Although Forest Gump was a fictional character, the scene was based on a historic event known as “Ping-pong Diplomacy,” which was a series of ping-pong matches between the Chinese and Americans in the early 1970s.

Asian dominance in ping-pong began during the 1952 Ping-Pong Championships in Mumbai, India. The Japanese dominated, winning four gold medals, but Chinese leader Mao Zedong declared that ping-pong would be China’s national sport.
