âBernie wants to have a contest,â Sherman told him. âBetween Nyce House and Rotten Stinking House.â
Wes laughed at Shermanâs pitiful insult. âYo, whatâs up with that? What kind of contest, dude?â
âWellâ¦â I rubbed my chin. âHow about a pie-eating contest? That would be fun for everyone, wouldnât it? We all like to watch guys stuffing their face with pies, donât we?â
They stared at me. âHeâs way crazy,â Wes told Sherman.
âNo. Give it a chance,â I said. âWeâll make it totally fair. Sherman, you pick a guy from my dorm to compete for Rotten House. And Iâll pick a guy from Nyce House.â
I slapped Wes on the back. âHow about Wes here? Wes is a definite winner. You like pie, donât you?â
âYo, I like winning,â Wes said, flashing a double thumbs-up.
âOkay, so Wes will go for Nyce House. That means youâll probably win. I donât stand a big chance. But, okay. You pick a guy from my dorm,â I said. âAny guy at all. And weâllâ¦uhâ¦have prizes. You know. Just for fun. A nice prize for the winner.â
âWhat kind of prize?â Sherman asked.
âWellâ¦â
I tried to look as if I was thinking hard. âHow about if my dorm winsâ¦I get your watch?â
âI KNEW it!â Sherman screamed. âI knew it. Itâs a cheap trick to take away my watch. No way! No way, Bernie! No contest!â
âBut, Sherman, old palââ I started.
âIâm not falling for it,â Sherman cried. âNo pie contest. Beat it, Bernie. Beat it!â
Wes stepped up to me and waved a fist in my face. âDude, I think Sherman wants you to beat it.â
âOkay, okay.â I turned around and walked to the door.
April-May June stood in the doorway. âHi,â I said. âHave you been thinking about those dance lessons Saturday night?â
âSherman wants you to beat it,â she said.
âIs that a yes?â I asked.
She pointed to the door.
I stepped through the doorway and headed back to Rotten House.
