LOFHI â¦
The gravelly voice came from very close.
âWho is there?â Finvar blinked and gasped. Flames flickered all around him, and someone else laughed.
Trickster, you cannot escape me forever.
The voice again, sounding croaky and harsh.
âWho speaks?â Finvar wiped sweat from his face.
How did I get here?
He couldnât remember. Heâd fallen, must have blacked out, and here he was. In Yffarn itself, perhaps. Not good. Fires flickered everywhere. Finvar appeared to be in some kind of pit. It was blazing hot, and he saw smoldering ashes piled in heaps.
A shadow rose up from the midst of that orange glow. A tall figure, cloaked and leaning on a spear, the tip glinting silver, as did his single eye. Framed by heat haze and murk, the figure wore a wide-brimmed hat, his face half-hidden.
I will find you, perhaps before you find yourself. The croaky voice came from the shadowy figure. Finvar felt anger rising insideâwas this an enemy? But the figure couldnât see him. Perhaps he wasnât real. Hopefully none of this was real. You had to be optimistic in situations like this.
âYouâre a phantom,â Finvar told the shadowy figure. The fire seemed to respond to his words, as the flames rose up all around him.
Whoops â¦
Finvar heard a second voice that seemed to come from inside his own stomach.
The flamed rose tall, as though responding to that second voice. They merged into a huge tongue of fire and shot toward him. Finvar screamed. The tongue licked fire and tore his flesh, eating into him. Scorching, melting. Stop it ⦠stop!
Very well ⦠The second voice again, answering back lazily. I forgot about you being vulnerable for a moment. He always brings the worst out in me. Here we goâflames, die back â¦
The pain vanished. Finvar knew the flames were part of him, just as the new voice was, too. âIâm hallucinating.â
No, your pain was real enough. This is why you need me around.
The voice had come from his own mouth.
âWhat is happening here?â Finvar asked the impostor lurking inside him.
Watch and learn, the voice replied. The flames had withdrawn and shrunk down to embers. Finvar stepped through the cracking glow and stood before the shadowy figure. Let me handle this, Finvar heard the hot, ashy voice whisper inside his head.
âItâs been a while, Oroonin,â Finvar heard himself say with that voice. âGood to see you using your old guise again. Iâve heard youâve been looking for me.â
âAll the new gods are looking for you, trickster. You are a villain and must be held accountable.â The single silver eye blazed looking around, searching in vain. Finvar heard himself laugh.
âYou have no power over me, Wanderer. And youâre a hypocriteâIâve helped Ansuâs short-lived children as much as you. And HER. All your kin messed up so badly, our new crew determined to do better. Couldnât do any fucking worse.
âBut though I tried industriously, Tyho and Kullaan were a disappointment. No patience, those two. Some of the others failed me too. The Faerie issue has raised its head again.
