Yawning, Marshalla squirmed as the last vestiges of sleep left her. The sun had only begun bathing their camp in its warm, welcoming light, but the air was already filled with the songs of the many woodland birds. Stretching, she sat up as she rubbed her eyes open.
âUp at last, I see,â Anieszirel said as she stared at Marshalla from the smouldering heap that was their camp fire.
âDidnât you get any sleep?â she asked, frowning.
Anieszirel shook her head as she smiled. âI donât need it, though I do indulge from time to time.â
Yawning once more, Marshalla nodded as she moved to stand. Then, she noticed Anise was still in her pallet.
âYou may as well wake her,â Anieszirel said.
âYeah,â Marshalla nodded as she knelt beside Anise, âelse sheâll end up brooding the whole day.â
Snickering, the chronodragon rose and rekindled the fire as Marshalla shook the slumbering Archmage awake.
âMmh,â Anise mumbled as she stretched.
âGood morning to you too,â Anieszirel replied.
A growl was Aniseâs response.
âNot much of a morning person, I see,â Anieszirel muttered.
âNot so much, no,â Marshalla replied, a response that earned her a glare from the Archmage and a snicker from the chronodragon.
âThe caravan hasnât been past yet, I take it?â Anise said as she rose.
âNo.â Anieszirel shook her head. âAlthough it would seem you made quite an impression in Barrow.â
âOh?â Marshalla and Anise said in unison.
âYes.â Anieszirel nodded. âFourteen men rode past last night, armed for war. Rode past not too long after you both went to sleep. From the way they were riding, youâd think Hazuel was after their souls.â
Anise frowned as she shook her head. âThat many men and horses, I wouldâve woken up.â
Anieszirel smiled. âI put a sphere of protection around you both. Youâre welcome.â
At this, Marshalla frowned.
âWhy would we need a sphere of protection when weâre in a concealment sphere?â she asked.
Anieszirel shrugged. âBecause I was feeling generous.â
But Marshallaâs frown remained.
âThere was something out there last night,â she said, âwasnât there?â
In response, Anieszirel looked at Anise.
âWasnât there?â
Sighing, the chronodragon turned back to Marshalla. âYes.â
âOh, come now!â Anise chided. âYou canât be sureââ
âBut whatever it was,â Anieszirel continued, âit kept its distance. You were never in any true danger, Marsha, truly. The barrier was just a precaution.â
Marshallaâs frown deepened as she stared from the chronodragon to the Archmage and back again.
âI am not a child, alright?â she growled. âStop treating me as if I was some mewling babe who needs to be succoured every waking moment. If there is something hunting us, I deserve to know.â
âThereâs nothing huntingââ
âNot now, but there was last night! You shouldâve said so!â
âWe didnât wish to frighten you,â Anise soothed.
âBugger that, weâre in this thing together, the three of us! Three! Not two and a half!â
In unison, Anieszirel and Anise bit their lips as they fought to keep their snickers within.
âWell?â
âYouâre right,â Anise replied as her smile broke free. âYouâre absolutely right. Next time weâll be more forthright.â
âThatâs all I ask.â
Nodding, Anise turned to the chronodragon, only for her smile to fade.
âThose men that rode past, youâre sure theyâre from Barrow?â
Anieszirel shrugged.
