Pachita

Strings of dessicated snake lay on the table in the living room. One by one Pachita picked them up, put them in a small stone bowl and, with a well-worn pestle, firmly ground them to a fine powder.

“I hope this will be enough,” Pachita sighed as she surveyed the meager contents of the bowl. “It will have to do in any case. This was all the mamporro, the hiervero (herbalist), could find for me. These doggone animals are getting scarce these days. You wouldn’t believe what he charged me for this one!”

“Isn’t there anything else Hermanito could use as a substitute?” I asked as I carefully filled the large gelatin capsules with the powder.

“Not for certain kinds of cancer,” she answered, shaking her head. “Mamporro capsules are the most effective...but only if started early enough. Most people who come to Hermanito are too far gone.” She sighed again as she placed another snake strip into her bowl. I wondered if she was thinking of David as she said it. It had been several weeks since his operation. He seemed to be much better, but it was still too soon to tell.

We worked in silence for a few minutes.

“Pachita...would you mind if I asked you something personal?” I said, hesitantly.

“Of course not, little daughter,” she smiled, glancing up at me.

“How did you begin with Hermanito?”

Pachita said nothing for several seconds as she continued grinding. “I was abandoned by my parents when I was a baby,” she said quietly. “A little black man from the Yucatan Peninsula adopted me. He took care of the animals in a circus. I trained as a trapeze artist, but what I really loved was working with the animals. I had a special gift with them—knew what they felt, knew instinctly how to cure them when they were sick.

“For example, one night one of the elephants was having a terrible time giving birth to her calf. No one knew what to do. It looked as though both the elephant and her baby would die. I was standing there watching when something came over me. I knew how to help the animal. I gave exact instructions for what had to be done. Both mother and calf were saved. The vet was very confused,” she laughed. “Here was a nine year old little girl telling him what to do!”

Pachita paused and rubbed her neck for a moment. “Here, you grind for a while, I’m tired.”

I pulled the stone bowl over to my side of the table and reached for another piece of snake. Pachita took a deep breath as she rubbed her face, then continued.

“I didn’t begin working as a full-trance medium until my late twenties. One day, at three o’clock in the afternoon, I became tired...so tired...and 1 fell asleep. For months this happened; at three o’clock I would fall asleep wherever 1 was. When I’d wake up I would have the sense that spirits had come to me to teach me about herbs and ancient treatments and things.
