“Absolutely not.” Florence argued, turning to face the rails of the Carrollton Avenue line and decidedly sitting down on the bench at the streetcar stop.

Silas recoiled, both hands on his hips, dark brows furrowed, “How about this,” he offered, with a gallant tip of his hat, “We’ll flip a coin on it. Heads I go, tails I go. Seems like a win-win to me.”

Even Holata rolled his eyes and shook his head, “Teche, did you hear what that Ezra man said? It’s the kingsnake god,” he huffed, “Are you what, hallucinating again?”

Silas grit his teeth, “You can’t even spell hallucinate!” he snapped.

“And you use the same word for ‘gravy’ and ‘road’, Silas, I wouldn’t be too critical of anyone else’s literacy.” Todd retorted.

Silas whipped around, pulled his hat brim down, and aimed an accusatory finger at Todd, “They’re spelled differently, and you know it!”

Todd scoffed and looked Silas up and down with apathetic scorn, “While we’re discussing it, you should also know that there’s no ‘W’ in ‘Mardi Gras’.”

Silas’ vexation manifested in bronzy scales across his brow, “Your problem has got to be that you don’t know who you’re talking to half the time,” he growled, before reaching down, pinching the bridge of Todd’s square frame glasses, and plucking them off of his face. The serpent prince placed the glasses on the bridge of his own nose and squinted theatrically, “Just as I thought–about as blind as a one eyed catfish in black wat–OW, shit, you mean little, north of Kentucky, cayenne intolerant—” he trailed off, huffing dramatically, “these are calfskin leather!”

Todd, who had pointedly stomped his heel across the laces of Silas’ dress shoe, caught his glasses in a waiting hand.

“A kingsnake is impervious to venom. They’re snake eaters, cannibals–and this Lusa Sinti creature, is the kingsnake god, who has been patiently awaiting your return to Acadiana so that they can eat you. You are not going.” Florence asserted sharply.

Silas lifted his right leg and experimentally flexed his toes, wincing, “Y’all will die out there without me. The land west of the river is wild and vengeful, it didn’t produce something like me because it's a hospitable, easily navigated wilderness. The people out there have learned how to stay alive, but y’all–”

“I’m taking them to find Lusa Sinti’s shadow trap. I can get around the bayou just fine.” Holata interjected, with a decided nod.

Silas snorted, “Absolutely not! You have no idea how to wheel and deal with humans, and we’ll need their help to–”

“Could you just stop being insufferable, for one moment?” Florence demanded hotly.

Silas’s eyebrows shot up, and his jaw worked for a moment before he huffed, “It’d be a moment too long.”

Todd rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with curved, black claws, “Juvenile…” he muttered.

“Well, this is awfully messy, isn’t it?”

They hadn’t considered Kayina’s presence until he spoke, and he was faced with unanimous disdain when he did.

Florence raised an eyebrow and Silas began to look increasingly nervous as he watched the various stages of a strategy surface in her stern but muted expressions.
