Khendric climbed the fence surrounding the great estates belonging to Ronoch Steelbane. Countless directions from strangers and he was finally there. The massive villa had a garrison, guard towers, and a fence. High profile guy, Khendric thought as he easily snuck forward.
Before reaching the building, Khendric crossed a garden. Having smeared himself with odour-neutralizing hinlarvae salve, no dogs or screamers smelled him. He remembered being bitten by a screamerâthe bite itself wasnât so bad. But the small, blue, translucent reptilian beast somehow made its victim scream uncontrollably until fainting from lack of air.
He tore an arm off his nice shirt and tied it around his head, hiding his nose and mouth. Time to intrude. Silent as the night itself, he easily scaled a wall and climbed onto a guards-less terrace. He easily picked the lock and went inside.
Huge staircases led up and down several levels and the rooms were larger than most commoner housesâbut next to no furniture. No paintings hung on the walls or flowers rested on windowsills. Khendric tried not to ponder too long and readied his paratis serum, elevating his senses to inhuman levels. Heâd hear guards a long time before they heard him.
A foul, acidic stench seeped through the house. Interesting. What is going on here? For a quick moment, a voice whispered inside his head, but so low he wondered if it was simply his imagination. He snuck down a staircaseâthe stench growing stronger. Another smell mixed with the acidic oneârotting flesh.
Khendric stepped into a large hallway after taking the stairs from the second level of the house, searching for the source of the smells. Though strongly overpowered by the acidic scent, they both danced around each other, seeming to stem from the same place.
Low chatter reached his ears from a room far to his left. So, Iâm not alone, he thought, happy he used the paratis serum.
Sneakily, he followed the smell, ending up in a kitchen. The guardsâs armoured footsteps rung around the house, but none headed his way. The smells of foods paled in comparison to the acidic one, which led straight into a wall. Khendric creased his brow and looked around. The smell didnât disappear into the wall, but exuded from under it, where a small vent hid, airing the acidic smell. Close to the ground, Khendric thought. Must be from a lower level.
Ronochâs villa was massive, with rooms everywhere, large and small, but he hadnât seen any stairs leading down. Khendric was in a smaller living room, having easily gone unnoticed by the guards, who werenât doing a good job, with slouched postures and an inattentive eye. Ronoch should invest in better security.
Different smells mixed in this room, like rubber and the odour of different human skin, almost drowning out the acid smell. He strolled about the room, trying to catch the individual scents. After a while, smelling yielded no more information, and he put his eyes to workâand saw it immediately. A thick blanket of dust covered everything inside: the tables, chairs and other furniture.
