Orotid made a note of the farm’s location in his command journal. He went over his list in his mind: location, families, livestock, incidents. That was everything.

Children were still scattered around the men and horses, excited for the periodic visit. With the horde so often on the move, small clusters like these didn’t often get visitors. There were a handful of these clusters dotted around the land between Austeria and Kyneira. Many had been convinced it would be safer farther south or in the cities but several still had fears about abandoning their farms. Orotid couldn’t blame them; no one wanted to leave their homes. But it did mean periodic checks by the army to ensure everyone’s safety.

Janu made sure each patrol bartered or bought goods from the farms; he didn’t want his people to suffer. Janu was a good prince, a good man to serve under.

The men worked to load the last of the purchased supplies. Most would be consumed on the current run, but whatever was left would be sold in the cities to help keep the chain of commerce running. Kingdoms were a delicate balance of supply and demand that couldn’t be allowed to teeter too far one way. Raber and Jothie were sequestered with the cluster’s elected leaders. Each cluster elected their own group to coordinate day to day life out here. These groups determined the needs for everyone and gave a list to the soldiers so that supplies could be delivered. Organization was key to keeping the system running smoothly.

He referenced his map stored in a protective tube at his belt. A total of seven clustered farms dotted the map. It had taken a large amount of negotiation to settle on the locations. His patrol had crisscrossed that map, hitting every farm as they went. They had one more stop, the last set of farms between here and Kyneira. They never reported any activity. Being so close to Kyneira, they were designated a safe zone, but they still had to check. Janu wanted everything north of Kyneira patrolled.

Orotid tucked his map back into its case. The village around him was a sprawling mass contained in the makeshift “wall” that the farmers had constructed: a mound of dirt four feet high and topped with sharpened fenceposts. It served its purpose.

No sheep or goats bayed. It quickly became apparent that smaller livestock could not be sustained this far north outside of defended cities. These small patches had turned to cattle and oxen. If they were unable to be collected, they at least stood a fighting chance against the grinlo and other predators. Plus, one animal was enough to feed everyone and then some, so fewer animals were needed.

The last of his men returned from their tasks and set about to leave. They had a long ride before their next camp.
