Over the next week or two, I became proficient at making virgin piña coladas.
Not that I was complaining. Each one that I created meant I got to spend time staring into those brown-green eyes of Jaggerâs. I had it bad. I knew it, and I totally owned it. Heâd taken to coming over after work for one drink. No more and no less. Wattley had joined him for a few evenings, but he began to make up pitiful excusesâI have to give my goldfish a pill or my chest hair needs deep conditioningâwhich left Jagger all by himself. Nate made a few appearances when he was ableâguess being a rich international financier kept you busyâbut only a few times. Each visit with a gift for Clarice, which never made it past Eladio. Iâd never seen our manager have such a strong reaction to anyone. Generally, Leroy was a true sweetheart. Whatever it was that rubbed him about Nate, it was a huge nettle in his corset.
That was not the case for Jagger and me. No way in hell. Jagger and I might be on opposite sides of the bar, but the attraction was impossible to ignore. Even Wattley had whispered to me that this was the most intrigued he had seen his brother since his divorce. That had been thrilling news because man did I want to get to know Jagger better in every sense of the word. It also raised some big questions that I only had tidbits of information about. Allen, Jaggerâs ex-husband, obviously was a hateful bastard. Iâd gleaned that from the small comments that Nate, Wattley, or Jagger himself dropped unthinkingly. Hopefully, with time and trust, heâd tell me what happened. For now, I was happy to mix his drinks, sing in his shop, and eat lunch with him on Saturdays. Maybe I could, with some gentle persuasion, finagle more time with him somehow. Somewhere where there werenât screaming queens.
âOh my goddess bitch, yes! Yes! O-fish-all hunty!â I sighed and glanced over at Gigi in full drag sitting at the bar. She was pink and yellow from head to toe. Everyone on the payroll was all Easterâd up for the Over the Rainbow Easter Drag Show. I thankfully had a chance to get out of my Miss Vicki get-up from earlier today. Now I was wearing big pink bunny ears and a fluffy white tail while I mixed mai tais. âFuck but that king was polished!â Gigi snapped her fingers along with the others who were judging the event.
âHe was so juicy! And I gagged on that rendition of âOoh La Laâ by Faces,â Jo-Jo exclaimed, her sky blue wig teased into some wild sort of anime hairdo that could possibly result in an eye injury to innocent passersby if she wasnât careful. She was all billowy, sky blue and cotton-candy pink with huge pink boots that she was kicking in glee. âSo much face. Like to die for face!â
âAnd next on the stage is a bitch that is going to pose the fucking house down.
