Chapter Thirteen

It took another two and a half days to reach the southern border of Faulknar. The reason Faulknar did not have to patrol the border with the Travellers’ lands became very clear. There was a natural feature running along the entire northern border of the Travellers’ territory that made invasion too laborious and, at times, too perilous to contemplate. As far as could be seen a giant scar in the land left chalky cliffs over the plains below, rising to over fifty times the height of a man. Anyone approaching from the Travellers’ lands would see a towering white wall, while from Faulknar it looked like the end of the world.

We camped at the top of the cliffs overnight so that we could have the whole day to descend the crumbling paths. We guided the horses down on foot, fearing that a missed step would plunge us to the plains so very far below. The white pebbles rolled under our feet with each step, frequently causing us to stumble. There was no firm rock to hold on to for support. If we strayed too close to the edge, the chalk would crumble away beneath our feet. Nalya snorted nervously but followed the calm lead of the other two horses. I concentrated on the trail and avoided looking down. I soon had a headache from the tension. My legs were shaking uncontrollably by the time we reached the bottom, just as the sun was starting to blend with the horizon.

We made a welcome camp at the foot of the cliffs. The chalk radiated the warmth it had soaked up during the day so there was no need for a fire. Not that anyone had the energy to make one that night. We all lay flat on the ground, unwilling to move even if Mobis had sent his Hordes.

‘Was there not a magickal way of getting down here?’ I grumbled as a stone dug into my back.

‘No,’ Drey grumbled back.

‘If you think that was bad, wait until the climb back up,’ Kade added.

‘Oh, thanks for making me feel so much better.’

Kade chuckled in the growing darkness. ‘Don’t worry, Magpie. You could just fly up.’

I groaned at the pleasurable thought. ‘Now that would be amazing. Drey, can you make me fly?’

‘No.’

‘So what’s the point of all this magick, then? You can’t make me fly up a cliff. You can’t produce a crystal-cool lake that I could just dive into.’

Kade joined in. ‘Can’t get me a feather-soft bed to lie down on.’

‘Can’t magick me a large plate of roast boar with all the trimmings.’

‘Can’t get me a large tankard of cold ale.’

We continued until it grew dark, when Drey shouted at us to be quiet and get some sleep.
