16 Walls

Roarc stared down at Lady Dark as she drew ragged breaths through her clenched teeth. Her eyes were closed, and she writhed in pain like she was fighting something unseen. The choker at her neck that she always wore glittered with a strange light. She muttered and cried out several times in a language Roarc had never heard before.

He propped her up and cradled her in his strong arms, gently stroking her obsidian locks. They were concealed in a collapsed structure, and it had grown dark outside. The latest patrol had passed over an hour ago and had taken the last of the torchlight with them.

Balanite.

The word clawed at his very soul. The legends of balanite were well known to his people. Long ago, the world had been sundered by an astral event. The sky had rained fire and broke the land asunder. Where the sky fall touched, silvery liquid remained. Most who touched the liquid died, but a brave few realized its potential and brought it to the ancient forges. The smiths went mad while creating a single blade: Moira.

"Roarc?"

Lady Dark’s whisper shook him from his thoughts. He stared down at her weak smile.

"I am here, Lady," Roarc said.

She struggled to sit up from his light embrace and touched the choker at her throat.

"It spoke to me," she said.

Roarc frowned. "What do you mean it spoke to you?"

She shook her head, obviously still groggy from being thrown through a building.

"The balanite. It…told me to go home," she said.

Roarc chuckled dryly. "Home is a long way from here Lady."

She turned and stared up into his eyes. "It didn't mean Teka. It showed me a place that I dream about. Green grass, azure streams, and a wild ocean at my back. Home."

Roarc tilted his head in thought. He had always assumed that Lady Dark had been taken in a raid as a baby, but the fact that she remembered a place so vividly was curious.

"Your home is Teka," he said, leaving little room for argument in his tone.

Her fingers caressed the choker at her neck, "There were other voices, Roarc, more voices than I have numbers to count them. They need something from me."

Roarc grabbed her roughly by the shoulders and shook her. "You were thrown through a building and lost consciousness, Lady. There were no voices, only nightmares."

Her scared face changed in an instant, becoming an icy mask of anger. He stared down at her thin shoulders and realized just how roughly he was treating her.

"You can let go of me now," she said, her voice frigid.

He quickly opened his hands and pulled them away, palms flat in apology.

"Forgive me, Lady. You were delirious. I needed to bring you out of it. You must understand," he stammered.

She regarded him coldly. "Oh, I understand, Roarc. You are just like our master. I will show you no more kindness.” With that, she grabbed her belongings and tightened her bag of crystals at her hip.

"Where are you going?" Roarc asked, struggling to his feet.
