It was around seven thirty by the time I got home. The others had gone out for a meal, but I decided to head home to put my boys to bed. I didn’t mind leaving early because, frankly, the wedding expo had wiped me out. Starving when I rolled up, I fantasized about the leftovers in the fridge.

“Good evening, Miss Joy!” Mrs. Senger called out from her porch. She set down the newspaper she was reading and got to her feet. “Where did you go tonight?”

“A wedding expo at the convention center.”

Mrs. Senger clasped her hands together. “Dear girl, are you getting married? Who’s the lucky gentleman?”

I shook my head and laughed. “No one. I’m still one hundred and fifty percent single. My best friend Everly’s getting married. I’m one of her bridesmaids.”

“I remember her. She’s one of your knitting friends. Are you excited? Is this your first time being part of a wedding party?”

“No. I was a bridesmaid for my sister’s wedding too.”

Mrs. Senger sighed. “You’d better get cracking. You know what they say. Three times a bridesmaid, and you’ll never be a bride.”

That old superstition? “Well, I’ve got one more time yet, so I’m not too worried.”

“What about that young man who’s watching the boys? Ben? He’s a charming scoundrel. I’ll bet you could have fun with that one.”

Her suggestion made me laugh even harder. “Sorry, but Ben’s just a friend.” Sure, the man was pretty, with a capital P, but he was also a player. Not my type at all.

“Mama.” Leo ran out of the house and wrapped me in a hug. “You’re home. Hi, Mrs. Senger.”

“Hello there, Mister Leo. I wish I could stay and chat, but I’ve got to get the house ready for my grandkids’ visit tomorrow. Take care, Joy.” Mrs. Senger picked up her newspaper and headed inside.

Jasper ran out of the house, the door slamming shut behind him. “How was the wedding show? Are you getting married?”

Ha. The boys were sounding more and more like our neighbor. “That won’t be happening anytime soon.” Although, while I was out with the girls, Derek had messaged to ask when I was free to get together. I hadn’t responded to him yet, but I planned to.

Too bad my skin still sizzled every time I thought about Aiden.

“So you’re not getting married?” Jasper said with a hopeful look.

“Not right now.” I hugged him again.

“Good.” Jasper squirmed out of my arms. “Because that means we get more time to plan with Ben.”

“Plan what?”

“He meant play.” Ben strolled out of the house. With his sculpted lips, long eyelashes, and bright blue eyes, he was almost too beautiful for a man. Ben’s good looks plus his armful of colorful tattoos all but screamed, “I’m every female’s fantasy,” and judging by the rumors, women lapped it up. “Why don’t you two go clean up inside?”

Leo and Jasper nodded, then turned and ran back into the house.

“Evening, Joy,” Ben said with a wink and a smile. “How was your time at the expo?”

Even his tone was flirty.
