Chapter Eighteen
Amid the clatter of plates and pans, Matt and Liz were chatting while they prepared breakfast for the four of them.
âDavid is still on a high,â remarked Liz, taking a packet of bacon from the fridge, âwhile Jeff seems much calmer. I think heâs getting himself mentally prepared for his undertaking.â
Matt said nothing. Despite having agreed to allow the young man to enter the unknown world of the Bunker, he still wasnât entirely convinced that heâd done the right thing. After all, they had no idea of what he could be walking into. It could turn out to be a nest of vipers, and suppose something went wrong?
âWe have a whole day to get through before Jeff goes into action,â Liz was saying. âHave you any plans? For my part, I must get to grips with finding out more about Marshdyke-St-Mary and its inhabitants. No way can we go back there without knowing a whole lot more about the place. Those wacky sisters proved that, I should never have been so candid with them. The moment I mentioned Molly, it was like the shutters came down.â She passed Matt a bowl of eggs. âPlus, Iâve got a few calls to make, and a Tesco delivery at nine fifteen. Meanwhile, David can do what he does best, pulling everything he can from the Net. Once Iâve done here, we can head into town. I want to talk to Chris Lamont in the library. I seem to recall that he used to cover the area around Marshdyke when he was a copper, so he might be able to tell us more about the place. Oh, and Iâd like a quick catch- up with Clem, if we can hunt him down.â
âIn which case,â Matt said, âI might take Jeff on a guided tour of Fenfleet and the surrounding area. We can also take a look at those places Toby mentioned â you know, where the kids get together and the scouts watch for suitable candidates.â
Liz nodded. âAbsolutely. It would give Jeff a good idea of the type of behaviour theyâre looking out for â as long as no one sees him with an ex-copper.â
âDonât worry, Iâll make sure Iâm not seen.â Matt added tomatoes to the bacon sizzling under the grill. âI suddenly realised halfway through the night that we havenât yet worked out what weâre going to do after Jeff is dropped off after his visit. I have no idea if they keep tabs on the kids when they get back, so we canât just wade in and pick him up.â
Liz pursed her lips, thinking. âI know. He could walk in the direction of one of the rougher areas of town, as if he was heading back home. As soon as he thinks heâs in the clear and isnât being followed, he can call us and weâll come and get him.â
âGood idea, and maybe we should get David to pick him up, rather than one of us,â Matt said.
âIn that case,â added Liz, âyou really must do that recce today.
