Chapter 14

The next day at work went slowly as I moved on to getting the customer database fixed up in the system. But I knew everything wasn’t going to be back to normal as promised by tomorrow when Megan came back to work. I had a new batch of plants out back to sort through and a bunch of small jobs that I’d been neglecting in the wake of the tech issues. I was considering coming in the next day alongside Megan to get ahead on everything. It would likely make my employee feel more wretched about the situation, so I was pondering—and perhaps procrastinating just a little—on what I might do to lift her spirits.

She was a woman with ideas, most of which were a hard ‘no’ from me while I was coming to terms with the giftware and nursery end of the business. But with the work going into the sales system, it got me wondering if some of those ideas were as far-fetched as I thought. I knew Megan would have semester break coming up in a few months where she’d have time to pick up some extra shifts, which had me Googling instead of plugging in names and addresses into the system.

I had one or two ideas but promised myself to mull them over for at least a few days before making any rash decisions. And in the meantime, I ordered a bunch of gnomes from my supplier which I hoped wouldn’t take too long to arrive. I knew it would put a smile on Megan’s face to see them leering at us from around the store. After getting that much settled, I picked up my phone before returning to the brain numbing work of data entry.

“Hey,” Ash answered. “How’s the sales system coming along?”

“It’s gonna be a bit before it’s back up and running. But everything is under control,” I said. “I’m just glad it won’t happen again. But I was calling to see if you were free tonight. I was thinking we could head to my place if Shianne and Aunty May are up to talking with Billy.”

“So soon? Has your grandmother found something?”

“Not yet, but I’ve told her about the plan, and she didn’t try to talk me out of it. Do you know how Zoe’s managing with Shianne? I didn’t get a chance to really chat last night or this morning. Gus only said it’s slow going.”

“Zoe thinks the potion is still affecting her, so it’s hard to do much other than offer support and talk with her about the world of magic. From what I gather, Shianne is more interested in how long it’ll take to get back to work. She hasn’t managed a link yet.”

I winced as I recalled the painful exercises of linking which were the first steps in learning from a mentor or family member. It was like grasping air at the start, which I imagined was just as frustrating for a fully grown adult as it was for an angsty teenager.
