FIFTEEN

Ted hurried to zip the artefact into the backpack and haul it over his shoulders, worried that at any moment the Mexican mercenaries would come barging into the room.

‘What is it?’ Quinn asked, startled by Ted’s sudden alarm.

‘They found us,’ he replied.

How had they tracked them down? Had they known they’d shot Quinn and searched every hospital within a twenty-mile radius? No, that couldn’t be it. His head snapped into survival mode once more, and after such a short reprieve he found himself thrust into danger again.

He opened the door a crack and peered outside. There was no sign of Eduardo, but two of the doors at the far end of the corridor were open. The big brute was systematically making his way from one to the next, searching for them. Ted took stock of their options. If they made a break for it, they’d have a chance. They’d need to hope that there was a fire exit at the other end of the corridor. But there was no guarantee that Eduardo hadn’t been ordered to shoot on sight now. He turned to face the room and quickly saw another option.

‘The window,’ he said. Quinn didn’t waste any time and tried to slide the glass pane open. But it was no use, it wouldn’t budge.

‘It’s locked shut,’ she said desperately.

‘Shit.’ There was no alternative, they’d have to try the corridor. They waited by the door as Ted was about to crack it open again. But as he placed his hand on the handle, Eduardo’s giant figure came into view through the door’s glass panel. Luckily, he was facing away from them and burst into the room opposite. It was now or never.

As Eduardo entered the room, Ted opened the door and the pair bolted out and set off down the long corridor. They’d made it ten feet before Eduardo’s voice shouted after them. They ignored him and continued running for their lives. Ted got a strange sense of déjà vu from the dream he’d had; being chased down a hospital corridor by an armed attacker. There was an emergency exit at the end of the corridor, as he had hoped. Eduardo fired the assault rifle into the air, smashing a light bulb on the ceiling and shattering glass just behind the pair. The noise was deafening, but they kept running until at last Ted drove all of his weight into the emergency door, setting off an alarm and almost sending him tumbling over as the door swung violently open. Then he felt an arm grab him, and before he knew it he was sent hurtling to the ground. The backpack, which had been over one shoulder, fell to his side, and a strong knee dug into his back, preventing him from getting back up.

‘Enough!’ Lucho spat, pointing his pistol directly into his face. It was a trap; they’d been waiting for them here. Ted looked to his left to see Quinn sprawled on the floor, clutching her injured arm. She was bleeding from her cheek.
