Poor Jack. He’d been grilled like he was some double agent spy or something. I’d even had to stop Rach from shining the light from her phone in his eyes. Like a trooper, Jack took it all with a smile. Mum prodded and poked with questions, too, but hers were more about his favourite meal, did he love his mother and how often did he go to the gym? All asked with a flirty twinkle in her eye. She was absolutely giddy. As for Georgia, she slept until the food arrived, ate her food, then went back to sleep.

“We should go,” Rachel finally said as Georgia star-fished on my bed. “I think Tinkerbell needs to get into her own bed, otherwise you could end up sharing with her all night.”

“No thanks,” I replied. “I’ve shared a bed with her before and it’s not pleasant. She hogs the covers and farts in her sleep.”

At that exact moment Georgia let out a long, tuneful fart. She even lifted her leg. I raised my hands as if to say, ‘see what I mean.’.

Jack sniggered and then pushed out of my office chair. “I’ll get the dishes washed up while you say your goodbyes.”

“It’s fine, Jack.” I placed a hand one his forearm and the contact made me jump. It felt like a shot of adrenalin had been pumped into my veins. I was sure he’d felt it too, because the muscle in his cheek pulsed. My breathing paused, then kicked back in and as Jack’s chest expanded quickly, I knew for definite that he’d felt the same buzz.

He swallowed, Mum gasped, and Rach cursed.

As Jack turned away from me, I turned to my friend. “What?”

She leaned closer, making her camping chair wobble on two legs as she gripped my forearm. “You two are fucking hot for each other, aren’t you?”

“Sush,” I hissed. “He’ll hear you.” We both looked over at Jack who was adding washing up liquid to the water running into the sink.

“He still wants you, Jules. I’m telling you.”

“Don’t be so stupid, not a chance.”

“I’m telling you. It’s written all over his face. I mean, why else would he spend two hours being grilled by me and your mum? He could have gone home ages ago, but he hasn’t.”

“He was eating his curry. It’s not like he’s just going to take it and go home, is he?”

Rachel raised an eyebrow. “He could have, but he chose not to. That says a lot.”

“No, it doesn’t. He was just hungry.”

She stood up suddenly, almost toppling her chair over, and patted my mum on the back. “Come on, Lynn, let’s go. You get the car started and I’ll bring the dead body.”

“I can take her,” Jack said, appearing at my side, wiping his hands on a tea towel.

“Would you, Jacky? That would be lovely,” Mum twittered.

I looked at Rach and frowned, mouthing ‘Jacky?’. Rach grinned and turned to Jack.

“Yeah, that would help, Jack. Thank you.” She turned to pack up the chairs while my mum gathered jackets and bags.
