Chapter Fifteen

Daryl

Daryl wiped away the last of his tears and breathed in deeply. A weight on his shoulder had lifted as he told his story. Looking back on all he survived, he realized how much stronger he was than he thought. He deserved none of the things his father did. Saying it out loud felt like it chipped away at the weight further. It cracked and shifted, falling from him with every realization he made.

Releasing himself from blame was the hardest thing he ever did. He still choked on the words as he repeated it. “I am not to blame.”

Ardamir nodded his head. “You’ve made great strides but there is more work for you to do.” He stood, and Daryl grabbed his arm.

“No. I need to start this journey. Please, Ardamir, help me get to Qrirena. I have to return and help my friends. There is too much left undone.”

Ardamir peered into his eyes and pulled his arm away. He paused for several moments as Daryl’s heart drummed loudly in his ear. “Fine, but you’ll have to stay close to me. The Underrealms are difficult to traverse and we’re going to places many souls get lost in.”

“I understand.” Daryl followed Ardamir away from the river as he pulled a key from his pocket and held it up against various trees along the path. He moved slowly, constantly glancing at their surroundings before moving to another tree.

“What are you doing?” Daryl asked.

“Shush,” Ardamir whispered. “I’m not supposed to have this.” He held up the key to another trunk, and it glowed purple. Ardamir shook his head and continued pushing forwards.

“What is that?” Daryl whispered as he crept behind Ardamir.

“It’s like a skeleton key. It opens almost any door in the Underrealm and can tell me where the door exits. Some doors have multiple exits and with the wrong key, you can find yourself in fiery pits or falling through the Underrealms into Tardan. We’re looking for a green light. It’ll get us to the Valley of Infinite Paths.”

“Valley of Infinite Paths?”

Ardamir puffed out his cheeks and forced a smile. “I’m not a tour guide. If you didn’t have the decency to learn about the afterlife, I will not tutor you now on it.” Ardamir walked ahead, flashing his key at more tree trunks.

“It’s not my fault when Templarians have given up on the gods,” Daryl retorted. Ardamir bristled and turned.

“They gave up on the gods because Wixora allowed those twins to remain after they murdered those in our bloodline for power. It doesn’t mean you can ignore your own culture. The gods are a part of us as much as our ancestors.” His face grew red, and he shook his head. “This is why I say you are not ready for this journey. You are ignorant of so much and do you think Qrirena will think it’s adorable that you walk into her castle like an unclothed babe begging to be returned to life for what? What are you going to
