Chapter 6

It was exactly 2:37 in the morning when my phone rang. I shouldn't leave my phone on when I go to bed, but I always worry that someone might need to contact me if there's an emergency. The love of my life is a fireman, my brother is a deputy sheriff, my grandparents are ancient and my parents are wandering around the country in a used recreational vehicle trying to find the perfect vacation spot for the family. What could happen, right?

I had been tossing back and forth on the sofa all night, dozing off every now and then for twenty minutes of so before the discomfort woke me up. I had just gotten semi-comfortable and now the phone was ringing and it was sitting on the coffee table just out of arm's reach. Reluctantly I sat up and picked up my phone to see who was calling. It was Charlene. Of course.

“What do you want, Charlene?” I mumbled.

“Sorry to bother you, Miss O'Shea, but do you happen to have one of things they call the jaws of life so that I can get Jimmy out?”

I was wide awake now. “What's happening, Charlene? Were you in an accident? Is Jimmy all right? Did you call 911?”

“Oh, Jimmy's okay, he just can't get out.”

“Get out of what?”

“Cooter's van.”

“Did Cooter have an accident?”

“No, it's just that Cooter and I got out of the van at the same time and Cooter locked the door on the driver's side because he left the motor running. I locked the door on the passenger's side when I went to put my suitcase in the back. So Jimmy is locked in and he's getting upset.”

“Why doesn't he just unlock the door?”

“He can't move his arms because he's strapped down.”

“Look, Charlene, I don't understand any of this,” I said. “Start from the beginning so I know what on earth is going on.”

“It's sort of a long story and you may want to go to bed before long,” she replied.

“Start from the beginning, Charlene.”

“You'll have to promise that you won't tell our parents.”

“I don't know what this is all about,” I said, “so I can't promise anything and I can't help you if you don't tell me what's happening!”

“Oh, all right,” Charlene said. “It's just that it's a secret. Jimmy and I were going to go down to Texas to get immolated.”

“Emancipated. Do you mean to tell me that you're seriously planning to leave town to get married and live in Texas?”

“Goodness no, Miss O'Shea! We're too young to get married! We just want to get emancipated so our parents can't tell us what to do anymore! We have to do chores and homework and Jimmy's dad even makes him cut the grass-”

“That's not how it works, Charlene,” I sighed. “I don't really want to explain it to you at this hour of the morning. Just tell me what happened with Jimmy.”

“Well, since Cooter James is driving for Goober, we asked him if he could drive us to Texas and he said okay.
