When there is no acceleration, an object is said to be in mechanical equilibrium.

Newton’s Third Law

The law of reciprocal action is pretty straightforward and very famous: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Chances are, you heard about this as a kid. It means that every motion results in the creation of another motion that runs in the opposite direction. For example, when you do a 5-mile march, your feet push against the ground with every step you take. What you don’t feel is that the ground is simultaneously pushing against you (which is partially the reason why your feet ache when you’re done).

Now if you strap on “full battle rattle” (as soldiers sometimes call it) and head underwater for training exercises, the force you exert is countered by the force of the water all around you—not just what’s under your feet. Though your weight is much lighter in this environment, you feel the force everywhere.
