CHAPTER 18
"Home sweet home," I mutter under my breath. The nasty storm has finally moved in and decided to park itself over the city, so when I pull the key out of the door, I flip the lights on, despite the fact that it's the middle of the afternoon. I look around the apartment, and realize something's not right. I have no idea what's out of place at first glance, but I know something is wrong.
"Everything okay?" Connor asks when I don't move from the doorway. I can feel him right behind me, standing close.
"I don't know," I say. I pull my gun out from my holster and walk in with it ready. "Hello?" I call out. I hear a bump in Jess' bedroom. I drop my bag on the floor, and run into the room. "Federal agent, show yourself, hands up where I can see them." The bedroom is dark, but I can hear the wind blowing the curtains. Whoever was here went out the window. Even though we're up high, there's a balcony with access to a fire escape just two stories down. I'm guessing whoever went down went that way. Jess and I have tried that route numerous times before, and it's easy enough if you know how to stick the landing.
I turn on my heels and head back out to the living room and open the door to the balcony. Gun still up, I walk out, aim toward the fire escape and look down. There's no one there.
"Cassie?" Connor's voice is soft, trying to make sure he doesn't scare me and lose his own head. "What was that about?"
"Someone was in her room. Someone was here and escaped when they heard us coming in, when I was unlocking the door." I let the gun and my arm fall to my side and pull out my phone to dial the agency. Usually, I'd just settle for 911, but in my gut, I know this wasn't random. "Have you touched anything in my apartment?" I ask.
"Just the doors." Ugh, I shove the phone back into my pocket. He's not even supposed to be here; I can't risk someone picking up his prints and running them through the system. If I wipe the door knob to clean them away, the intruder's prints will be gone, too. If I really want to find Rossett, I'll need Connor in on this, and I can't risk them arresting him as the intruder.
"Fine, we'll figure this out ourselves." I head back inside. "Grab my stuff and put it in that room over there," I say, pointing to my bedroom. "Just leave it on the bed. I'll move stuff soon." While he's busy with my bag, I'll take a look at Jess' room. Walking back in, I don't notice anything different. Everything in Jess' room has its own place, from the Bible on her left nightstand to the strange fake flowers on the right nightstand. Her desk and chair are on the opposite wall, the chair pushed all the way in, just like it's supposed to be.
