1. Encourage and give space for the student’s constructive, creative, and collaborative use of technology (or introduce new avenues for such). There are really easy entry points at their fingertips: Scratch, Minecraft, moviemaking on iPads.… Kids can transfer these skills to academic work as well as personal endeavors.

2. Give them some fixed amount of time for pure media consumption, be it videos or playing games, and be present for it. This acts as a pressure release valve. Motivated kids will always find a way to screw around, but my experience with one-to-one device programs in grades six through eight is that kids need to be able to explore their device and the world it allows them to tap into. When you give them time and space to do it, they are more likely to respect the rules of the road at home and in class.”
