SINGLE U

A single letter u can make a variety of sounds:

• a single u sometimes makes the short u sound.

sun / duck / nut / shrug / bucket

• a single u occasionally makes the (short) oo sound.

put / full / push / pull / sugar

• the u_e, u_i, and u_y rules usually make the long u.

tube / super / ruby / assuming / dutiful

• sometimes, the u_e, u_i, and u_y rules include a consonant y + long u.

cube / huge / mute / costume / confused

puny / music / cupid / amusing / mutiny

• some words that begin with u also include a consonant y + long u.

used / unique / usual / unit / union

• the prefix un almost always makes the short u.

undo / under / untie / uncle / unbelievable

• at the end of a syllable, a single u often makes the long u sound (the second row below includes a y).

flu / tuna / lunar / tuba / brutal

future / human / fuel / humor / accumulate

• an unstressed syllable (in a multi-syllable word) often makes the soft uh sound like the a in ago.

• rarely, a single u makes the short e sound like bed.
