This technique really only works where there is more than one drawing. In a single-frame cartoon there’s never enough mileage for the reader to understand that the strange objects scuttling around in the background make up this secondary level. In a book or a strip, it’s much easier to achieve, and in some cases these secondary figures have become stars in their own right, such as Calvin’s parents in the cartoon Calvin and Hobbes.

the ‘p’ word

Perspective is a subject that people tend to shy away from like a frightened horse. There is a feeling that it is mysterious and difficult to master, but in fact it can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. I have heard many people say, ‘I don’t do perspective.’ In some extreme cases, people give up trying to paint or draw altogether rather than tackle it. This attitude is nonsense! There is perspective all around us. We see it every single moment of every single day of our lives. Without perspective, the world as we view it would be a very curious place indeed.
