Bad Guys on the Playground

“Are the bad guys out there yet?” Nate excitedly calls out to Adam from the snack table. With this question, John, Lucinda, and Nate jump up to the window to look out at the playground with Adam.

“Yeah! There they are!” Lucinda declares.

The preschoolers hurriedly clean up their snack area and head outside. This same scene has been happening for a few weeks now. The preschoolers anticipate outdoor time with excitement and trepidation. The bad guys are three of the kindergarteners who join this group in the play yard for recess each day. They are bigger and older, and these three-and four-year-olds notice and respect these differences.

Once on the play yard, the chase game begins. Nate bravely runs up to the three boys and shouts and laughs, “You can’t catch me.” The boys begin to chase him until he scampers to the top of the tunnel, the safe zone. His comrades are there waiting. The kindergartners keep an eye on them but respect the rules of the game.

John asks worriedly, “Did they get you?”

Nate says breathlessly, “No, I runned faster and I climbed so fast to here.”

Lucinda brags, “Yeah, they can’t get me too.”

John says, “Come on, let’s go! They’ll never get us.”

They run out to the center of the grassy area, taunting the bad guys, fiercely growling, with eyes bright and alert. The bad guys take the bait, and the chase begins again. The preschoolers’ movements are quick as they dodge their pursuers. At one point, Adam runs to a teacher and clings to her side, hiding from Suki, the kindergartner on his tail.

The teacher asks him, “Are you done playing this chase game, Adam? You can tell Suki if you’d like to stop.”

Adam looks out from behind the teacher, growls at Suki, darts to the tunnel, and bounds to the top. Safe again.

The game ends for today as the kindergartners are called back to their room. It will in all likelihood begin again tomorrow, as it has now for weeks and even years past. When the bad guys were preschoolers last year, they played similar games, only they called their foes the big kids.
