Chapter 10
âLeah?â I asked, and Eddie stopped to turn back to me. âThe young girl from The Fox? She was out in the hills that night?â
âYes,â Eddie replied, and he looked slightly confused. âIs that important? Oh, you donât think she could have possibly had something to do with Billy, do you? Oh, dear, sheâs only a girl. Iâm sure it was nothing.â
Skye looked unsure, and I thought about how unhappy Murray had been to have us around. Maybe the pub owner knew something, and Leah could be the key to finding out just exactly how much he had kept from us.
Eddie led us up the path behind the hotel, which we had briefly wandered up with Declan the day before.
âSo, what did Leah say?â Skye asked as we walked up the gentle incline. âDid she seem nervous when you ran into her?â
âWell,â Eddie said. âShe did, now that you mention it, but I mean, we probably just gave her a fright. But she was very sympathetic when we told her about Snooker, and she was quite happy to help us dig.â
âAnd she was alone?â I asked. âWas she carrying anything?â
âShe seemed to be by herself,â Eddie nodded. âI think she had a bag, but nothing unusual about that. She must have just been having a walk.â
I didnât want to discuss my thoughts in front of Eddie, so we kept relatively quiet as we continued up the hill. Leah was a teenage girl, so it was very possible she had snuck out for a secret smoke or some other harmless activity. If so, then it was just an unlucky coincidence on her part, but we couldnât ignore the fact that she had been near the scene of the murder that night.
âItâs not too much further,â Eddie said. âThereâs a little ridge coming up, thatâs the spot.â
âOkay,â I nodded. âEddie, do you remember anything that Leah said when you saw her? Did she give any reason why she was out in the hills by herself?â
âI donât believe she did,â Eddie said. âShe just said she had gone for a walk and lost track of time. Although, she did ask us to not mention we had seen her. I think she would get in trouble if her parents found out she had been out too late on her own.â
I gave Skye a worried glance as we stopped at a small clearing which was just to the side of the path. You could see out onto the harbour, and there was a collection of bushes and wildflowers that created a little ring around a patch of ground. It was a beautiful view, and I noticed a little mound of dirt in the middle of the bushes.
âHere he is,â Eddie said as he wiped his eyes on his sleeve. âYouâll excuse me if I donât want to look?â
âOf course, âI said gently, and I took the shovel from Skye. âI promise Iâll put him straight back, just as soon as weâve checked.â
The old man nodded and blew his nose on a crumpled handkerchief as he wandered away from the clearing.
