The great campus at Columbia University was inspired by the example of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition at Chicago and the Nènot design for the Sorbonne in Paris.14 The development of the Pantheon ideal from Ancient Rome, via Jefferson, to the Low Library is a marvelous challenge to the appreciation of the genius of the architects of all three buildings. The layout at Columbia may also have grown out of Jefferson’s plan for the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. Columbia, in turn, inspired Cass Gilbert’s layout for the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.

McKim, Mead & White revitalized the design of the town house with such beautiful structures as the Nickerson and Pyne houses. Study of these designs will provide ample rewards for designer and student. At a smaller scale, the brilliant collaboration between sculptors like Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Frederick MacMonnies, Stanford White and McKim should be discussed. Stanford White and Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the innovative memorial to Admiral Farragut where the unity of form of sculpture, typography, and architecture describes the shared vision of these two men. McKim and Saint-Gaudens collaborated on the great Shaw Memorial on the Boston Common. However, their finest work, also commemorating the Civil War, is the statue of Victory leading General Sherman, situated at the southeast corner of Central Park. McKim’s design for the base is the equal of the best equestrian statue bases in Europe.
