Octagonal dome of Santa Maria del Popolo.

Dome of the Chigi Chapel, with design and mosaics by Raphael.

While the floorplan and architectural ‘bones’ of Santa Maria del Popolo retain the characteristics of the Renaissance structure, much of the ornamentation in the basilica is full-on Baroque. A renovation, begun in 1658 at the behest of Pope Alexander VII and executed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, added the white stucco embellishments and dramatically changed the size of some windows to better control the light – a concept begun in the late Renaissance but heavily emphasised during the Baroque. Alexander VII was of the Chigi family, and oversaw the refurbishment of the Chigi Chapel to include its current Baroque elements.
