"Do you think there's any chance he'll stop?" Sandy asked Raoul.
Raoul turned to look at Sandy in the tallow light that spilled from the taverns and gin shops lining the street in front of the Green Dragon. "I very much doubt anything will stop Alistair Rannoch. But I think he realizes he can't manipulate you as easily as he thought."
Sandy nodded, eyes dark smudges. "So it didn't do any good."
"On the contrary. It's always good to stand up to tyranny."
"That's O'Roarke." Sam glanced up and down the street. "Never miss a chance to argue for revolution."
Three young men, silk hats askew, staggered out of a tavern and pushed past them. Grunts came from an alley to the left. A couple were using it for what might be called a trysting place, save that the woman was probably being paid. Raoul saw Sandy's mouth tighten and was sure he was thinking of Bet.
Harry cast a sidelong glance at Sandy. "We have more evidence. That will help. And you're going to be dealing with Rannoch for the foreseeable future, Sandy. You staked out a position in a long chess game."
"He can threaten me all he wants," Sandy said, as they turned a corner into a darker side street. Most of the shops were shuttered, though shouts and laughter echoed from the adjoining streets. "I won't have him threatening Bet."
"Even if he does," Sam said, "we won'tâ"
A figure lunged from the side and grabbed Sam. Raoul spun round and kicked Sam's attacker's legs out from under him.
"Don't move," a hoarse voice said from across the street. "I've got your friend."
Another man had an arm wrapped round Harry's throat. The moonlight caught the knife held to his neck. Sandy had gone still. Raoul met Harry's gaze. Harry curled his hand to show three fingers. Raoul inclined his head a fraction of an inch. On a count of three, Harry elbowed his attacker and spun away. Raoul rushed forwards and knocked the attacker into the wall behind them. Sandy grabbed a stick and swung it at Sam's attacker.
"We don't know anything," Sam's attacker yelled as Harry's attacker slid to the ground. "Just hired to give you a warning."
"Hired by who?"
"Gentry cove. At the Green Dragon."
Sandy bashed the stick against the cobblestones. "In other words, my father just hired people to attack my friends."
