CHAPTER EIGHT

They were not attacked when leaving the city, though everyone they passed stared with suspicion. Dannen could not blame them. He, too, would have been bothered by the sight of such an odd group walking down the city’s main street in bloody clothes with soot-stained faces and hands.

Still, the others weathered the stares without complaint—likely too shocked to still be among the living to care—and Dannen hardly noticed. He was too busy thinking of Clare, and of all the wrong a man could do without ever meaning it. He always set out to do good—or at least to do nothing at all—but it seemed he always ended up doing bad anyway. Certainly he’d done so with Clare, first breaking her heart without knowing it and now leaving her in the ill graces of the most powerful man in the city.

“She’ll be okay,” Fedder said after an hour of walking, as if he could read Dannen’s mind.

Dannen glanced at him. “Will she?” It wasn’t a challenge, not really, and what he wanted more than anything was for Fedder to tell him she would be, to lie, if he needed to. But the mage said nothing, only walked on in uncharacteristic silence.

Perhaps aware of his dark mood, Mariana and Tesler also did not speak. It was a somber party which finally arrived at the northern gate of the city. Four guards were stationed there, and when they saw Dannen and the others approach, they went for their weapons. “Ho, there,” one said, “just what in—”

Fedder wasn’t a patient man at the best of times, and these were far from the best of times. He raised his massive fist above his head and suddenly it was wreathed in flame. “Get out of our way,” he growled in a voice which promised violent and permanent retribution should the guards refuse him.

The men were paid well to be guards in such a dangerous city, made even more money, Dannen suspected, by the many bribes they were paid, but it didn’t take any of them long to mark Fedder as a mage and not much longer than that to decide that, however much they were paid, it wasn’t enough to get set on fire. They got out of the way, and Dannen and the others walked through the gate. No doubt, the guards would run and tell those who paid them to keep tabs about the incident as soon as Dannen and the others were past, but he didn’t care. The only thing they would be able to tell was that the group was going north, and it was a big world, after all.

A big bitch of a world.
