Denial

Because anorexia is ego-syntonic, denial is common. Being in denial—lacking the self-awareness to recognize the reality of your situation, behaviors, or thoughts—is a dangerous barrier to your recovery. The inability to be objective and introspective that characterizes denial makes it dangerous, because insight is necessary for self-initiated change. For example, you may be in denial that your exercise regimen is compulsive; you may truly believe and insist that you are choosing to exercise for the “right” reasons; and you may deny feeling compelled to exercise to feel balanced, to reduce anxiety, or to burn calories.
